Accessibility became a guiding principle for the City of Woodstock, IL, shaping how the community planned, invested, and delivered services for residents of all ages and abilities. What began as an effort to improve ADA compliance evolved into a citywide initiative focused on digital inclusion, safer pedestrian infrastructure, accessible public spaces, and long-term planning.
The City first strengthened accessibility across its website and digital communications, achieving an average website accessibility score of 97%. At the same time, Woodstock gathered community input through public surveys, accessibility training, empathy simulations, and a professional walkability audit to better understand the barriers residents experienced. Those efforts informed the City’s ADA Transition Plan, creating a roadmap for removing barriers and improving accessibility across municipal operations and public spaces.
Planning quickly translated into action. In 2025, Woodstock opened an Intergenerational Playground designed to provide inclusive recreation opportunities for people of all ages and abilities. Accessibility improvements were also incorporated into renovations at the historic Woodstock Opera House and plans for the City’s Recreation Center modernization. The City complemented these investments with sidewalk gap closures near local schools, improving safer walking routes for students and families. From 2024 to 2025, citywide crashes also declined by 26.9%, reflecting Woodstock’s continued investment in safer transportation infrastructure and pedestrian connectivity.
Building on that momentum, Woodstock secured a $250,000 Illinois Department of Transportation Safe Routes to School grant to expand sidewalks, reconstruct accessible crossings, install a pedestrian refuge island with flashing beacons, and improve safety along the Illinois Route 47 corridor. Once completed, the project is expected to create an approximately 3.4-mile continuous walkable corridor connecting neighborhoods, schools, parks, and community destinations.
The initiative reflected Woodstock’s commitment to creating lasting community impact through thoughtful planning and collaboration. By combining resident feedback, strategic infrastructure investments, and accessible digital services, the City made it easier for people to move safely, participate more fully in community life, and enjoy a more connected and inclusive experience.
