July 19, 2024 marks one of the largest IT outages in history. For 79 minutes, about 8.5 million Windows devices failed to run, including those in use for critical operations. This was because of a flaw in an update from the cybersecurity company, CrowdStrike, whose platform is used widely by organizations across industries — including airlines, banks, and public transit systems.
The CrowdStrike incident serves as a cautionary tale about the impact of supply chain vulnerabilities. While this outage in particular was caused by human error rather than cybercrime, it mimics the effect of bad actors targeting the software used to support systems such as Microsoft instead of attacking those systems directly.
October is Cyber Security Awareness Month, the perfect time for local governments to learn more about supply chain cyber security and how to assess and address risks. Join CivicPlus® technology and cybersecurity experts for a comprehensive discussion on this issue based on takeaways from the CrowdStrike event. They also focus on how to make sure your digital solutions provide the security you need to protect your agency and residents.
