Population:

26,129

In 2023, the City of Eureka launched a series of Community Health Town Halls led by the mayor and the new crisis response team. These quarterly events, available in person and live broadcast, address key health topics such as mental wellbeing, substance abuse, and homelessness, reflecting the needs of both Eureka and the surrounding rural areas. The town halls were designed to overcome the limitations of traditional public meetings, which often restrict interactive dialogue between residents and officials. Each session features panel discussions with local experts and community leaders, allowing residents to submit questions anonymously or engage directly with panelists. Topics covered address the ongoing issues within the community and promote and discussions to find a resolution.

The town halls have significantly improved civic engagement by creating a platform for open dialogue between community members and service providers. Unlike traditional town hall meetings where officials are there to only listen, these events foster meaningful conversations and allow for real-time interaction. This approach has strengthened connections among service providers, reduced stigma around sensitive issues, and improved collaboration between various community organizations. By addressing community concerns directly and transparently, the town halls have enhanced public understanding and support for vulnerable members of the community, thereby reinforcing the motto, “Community-based problems require community-based solutions.” The initiative has helped to build a more inclusive and informed community by facilitating respectful and constructive discussions.
